A lot of FD ownership problems come from assumption. The previous owner says the motor was rebuilt. The ad says the cooling system was refreshed. The car idles okay, so it must be fine. That is how people get burned. Documentation matters, but actual inspection matters more.

Oil change intervals depend on use, tune, and fuel quality, but a conservative habit is smart. If the car sees spirited driving, short trips, or long periods of sitting, shorten the interval. The cost of frequent oil changes is minor compared to apex seal-related pain.

Coolant

The FD’s cooling system deserves constant attention because heat is the enemy. Old coolant, weak hoses, tired clamps, or a marginal radiator can push temperatures in the wrong direction fast. A rotary that overheats is not just having a bad day. It may be starting an expensive chain reaction.

Watch for discoloration, residue around fittings, swelling hoses, and cooling fans that do not behave consistently. If the history is unknown, a full coolant service and inspection should happen early in ownership.

Transmission and differential fluid

These often get ignored because the car still shifts and moves. That is not a good standard. Fresh gear oil helps protect synchros and driveline components that are not getting easier or cheaper to replace. On an older FD, especially one that has seen track days or hard launches, changing these fluids is basic self-defense.

Brake and clutch fluid

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, and many FDs now spend part of their life parked. That means fluid condition can be bad even if mileage is low. Flush it on age, not just mileage. The same logic applies to clutch hydraulics if the pedal feel is inconsistent or engagement starts changing.

Cooling system: the make-or-break section

Every FD owner eventually has to deal with vacuum hoses. The factory twin-turbo system is clever, but it is also one of the car’s most frustrating maintenance zones. Age hardens lines, previous owners reroute things badly, and boost leaks create all kinds of weird drivability issues.

Symptoms can include unstable idle, hesitation, odd transition behavior, inconsistent boost, and rich or lean conditions that are easy to misread. On a mostly stock car, restoring vacuum routing to a known-correct setup is usually worth the effort. On a single-turbo conversion, life may be simpler in some areas, but you still need to inspect every hose, fitting, and clamp.

The point is not that every FD needs a full vacuum system rebuild immediately. It is that old rubber and improvised fixes do not age well. If the engine bay looks like three owners had three different ideas, clean that up before chasing tune-related ghosts.

Ignition and fuel system health

A rotary that misfires is not something to ignore until next month. Weak ignition can wash housings, hurt performance, and make the engine feel rough in ways that get blamed on everything else.

Coils, wires, plugs, and grounds all matter. The FD is especially sensitive to ignition health, so if the components are old or unknown, replacing them with quality parts is usually cheap insurance. This is one of the most common areas where a car can feel transformed without touching power mods.

Fuel delivery is just as important. Old fuel filters, weak pumps, aging injectors, and stale fuel from long storage can create lean conditions you do not want anywhere near a boosted rotary. If the car sat for months or years, inspect the entire system instead of just tossing in fresh gas and hoping for the best.

Belts, mounts, and age-related rubber parts

Mileage lies on old JDM cars. Time is what gets them. Even a lower-mile FD can have dried seals, cracked bushings, hardened coolant hoses, and worn belts simply because the parts are decades old.

Accessory belts should be checked for cracking, glazing, and tension issues. Engine mounts deserve attention too because a tired mount can add vibration and stress to surrounding components. The same goes for fuel lines, intake couplers, and suspension bushings. None of these are glamorous jobs, but they are the kind of details that make an FD feel tight instead of sketchy.

Suspension, steering, and brakes

The FD chassis is one of the reasons people put up with everything else, so keep it right. If the steering feels vague, the car wanders, or braking is inconsistent, do not just blame old-car character.

Worn ball joints, bushings, tie rods, and dampers can make a great chassis feel disappointing. A clean alignment after replacing tired suspension parts can change the whole car. Brake rotors, pad condition, soft lines, and caliper health all matter too, especially if the car was modified for track use at some point.

This is also where wheel and tire choices matter more than people admit. Cheap tires on an FD make no sense. You are not preserving the experience by cutting corners on the one thing connecting the chassis to the road.

Electrical and sensor checks

FD electrical problems are often less dramatic than people fear, but old connectors and sensors can still create a mess. Look at battery condition, grounds, alternator health, and signs of hacked wiring around boost controllers, gauges, fuel computers, or alarm systems.

Sensors related to coolant temp, throttle position, and air metering can all affect drivability. The problem is that many modified cars have had years of piggyback systems, removed emissions hardware, and quick fixes layered on top of each other. Cleaning up wiring and verifying sensor health often solves problems that owners have been tuning around for years.

A realistic maintenance rhythm for FD ownership

The best FD owners are not always the ones with the biggest build budget. Usually, they are the ones paying attention. Check oil constantly, monitor temps, listen for changes in idle or startup behavior, and inspect hoses and wiring before a small issue becomes a tow truck story.

If the car is stock or close to stock, preservation and careful restoration usually beat unnecessary modification. If it is already modified, be honest about whether the setup is cohesive. A well-tuned single-turbo FD can be easier to live with than a neglected sequential-turbo car, but a badly sorted build is still a badly sorted build.

There is also no shame in using rotary-specialist help. These cars punish guessing. If a shop understands 13B compression testing, cooling bleed procedures, and common FD vacuum issues, that experience is worth money.

Owning an FD is not about chasing perfection. It is about respecting the platform enough to stay ahead of it, because the cars that survive are usually the ones maintained by people who never let small problems become normal.
